As if the Detroit Tigers needed more injury news as they look to finish the 2023 season on a high note, Tigers pitcher Matt Manning took to the mound on Wednesday. He left the game early after taking a comebacker off of the foot from the bat of New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

Manning had to leave the game early, having Beau Brieske come in to relieve him. But, for the Detroit Tigers, it has to be an eerily similar situation for Manning, who's dealt with a foot injury in the past, though this time it was a different part of his foot.

The Tigers announced that Manning's 2023 season has ended as he will need to tend to the injury. He has a fractured right foot after wearing the comebacker off the foot. In his postgame interview, he was asked what positives he took away from this... he smirked and mentioned getting hit by Stanton, who's a former MVP. But, he was able to secure the out on the play, which should be worth something, on a 119.5 mph comebacker.

For Manning, it has to be a tough thing for him to have his season ended early. He's seemingly been able to find a groove and settle into his role with the Tigers rotation in 2023. He made 14 starts in 2023, where he accumulated 77.0 innings pitched.

Manning pitched to a 3.62 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP and had 20 walks to 49 strikeouts on the season. He had started to get into things and find his way as part of the Tigers rotation this season. He went through some ups and downs but earned his spot in the rotation.

As was mentioned in the interview above, Manning had been in a bit of a groove lately, which is good for the right-hander, even though his 2023 season has come to a close. The Tigers should be happy with his performance this summer, even if it's a somber end for him after suffering the injury on Wednesday.

The Tigers have to be hoping that Manning can come back healthy once again in 2024. If Manning is able to bounce back with a healthy comeback, he could be an asset to the backend of the team's rotation.

It's a tough end of the season for Manning. The Tigers are just hoping that he can come back healthy next season as he heals up and goes through rehab for the 2024 season. It's just tough news for someone who's already gone through enough in terms of injuries.
