Since last the Tigers and Twins met all of four days ago, neither team has had a particularly great go of things. Detroit went 1-3 against the Rangers, playing well against them but learning why the Rangers are defending World Series champs and the Tigers are not even in the discussion. The Twins went 0-3 on the road against a good Orioles club.

Someone's momentum is about to change when the teams meet at 8:10 p.m. ET tonight at Target Field in Minneapolis.

An interesting note in this game, the two starting pitchers have each faced their opponents within the past week, and both times their teams picked up victories. Minnesota won an 11-5 game in 12 innings when Joe Ryan started. He gave up three runs in six innings, though just one was earned. He struck out 12 -- a situation the Tigers will definitely have to avoid tonight.

A day later Detroit's Jack Flaherty got the start in a 4-3 Tigers victory. He allowed three runs in 6-1/3 innings while striking out eight.

One thing that will hinder everyone: the weather. Minneapolis has been in the 30s today and it will only get worse as the night goes on.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Detroit -- RHP Jack Flaherty -- Flaherty's 4.91 ERA can be a bit misleading. He allowed six runs in his second start of the season. He gave up three in his most recent one, and the Tigers have won two of the three he has made. He has 20 strikeouts and 3 walks in 18-1/3 innings, not too shabby. He generally uses a fastball and a slider. He's not given up a lot of hard contact, with a combined 9.5% either rated as solid or barreled at Baseball Savant.
  • Texas -- RHP Joe Ryan -- The Twins will send Joe Ryan to the mound. In three appearances, Ryan has been pretty good, posting a 2.60 ERA and 0.92 WHIP. The Twins won two of the three starts. Most impressive: he has 24 strikeouts and just two walks allowed in 17-1/3 innings. His contact has been a little harder with a combined 13.9% either solid or barreled.
