The Detroit Tigers came out of a four-game marquee matchup with the Minnesota Twins with a split over the weekend. It's hard to know entirely how to feel about that.
On one hand, the 9-6 Tigers were close to taking three out of the four and only a late-inning stumble in the first game Saturday kept them from doing that. On the other they were close to losing three out of four and only an eighth inning rally on Sunday helped to save the series.
If you add that up, it probably equals the result they deserved. They are one game out of first in the standings. While peeping at the standings isn't particularly useful, compared to last April just staying in the hunt is good enough for now.
The defending champion Texas Rangers will be visiting Comerica Park for another series against a potential playoff team and another measuring stick. Though the Rangers are 8-8, they are first place early on in the AL West.
Probable starting pitchers
- Detroit -- RHP Reese Olson -- Olson has made two very opposite starts for the Tigers to start the season. He threw 5-2/3 scoreless innings in his debut, allowing three hits and striking otu three. Last Monday in Pittsburgh, he gave up six runs on nine hits in 4-1/3 innings. He has six strikeouts and five walks. in 10 total innings.
- Texas -- RHP Michael Lorenzen -- The former Detroit Tigers pitcher will be making his 2024 debut after signing a one-year deal with the Rangers last month. In 2023, he posted a 5-7 record with Detroit and carried a 3.58 ERA. He was the team's lone All-Star representative. After being traded to the Phillies, he finished the regular season going 4-2 with a 5.51 ERA. Sometimes it's nice to have some lineup help, apparently. He threw 2-2/3 scoreless innings in the postseason for the Phillies.
