The Tigers appeared as if they'd have a chance for late-innings heroics yet again on Wednesday after rallying to tie the game up in the eighth inning. Then the otherwise steadfast fielding we've seen this season allowed a couple of Rangers runners on balls that didn't make it out of the infield and Shelby Miller gave up a hard hit that most certainly did, resulting in a 5-4 defeat in the end.

Detroit will try to pick up another four-game split when they close out the Rangers series at 1:10 p.m. today at Comerica Park. There will be some national attention on this game, as the Rangers have called up pitcher Jack Leiter to make his MLB debut.

The Tigers' lineup is staring to show a little more power and get a little more consistent, with Kerry Carpenter picking up his third home run of the season on Wednsday and Parker Meadows his first. While still homerless on the year, Spencer Torkelson had a double. It looks like only a matter of time before he finally breaks through as well.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Detroit -- RHP Kenta Maeda -- Kenta Maeda got off to a tough start for the Tigers in a mess of an appearance against the White Sox, but has allowed three runs and one run during his last two starts against the A's and Twins, so maybe he's finding his stride a bit. Texas promises to be the biggest challenge yet, however. In 14 innings, he has given up 14 hits and five walks while striking out 10.
  • Texas -- RHP Jack Leiter -- One of the Rangers' top prospects, and son of Al Leiter, Jack Leiter will be making his major league debut against the Tigers. The second pick overall in 2021, some of the shine came off his star when he put up a 5.54 ERA in his first season of professional ball and 5.19 ERA last season between Double-A and Triple-A ball. He made two starts and three appearances with a 3.77 ERA during his second-go at Triple-A this year and got the call to make his debut.
