The Detroit Tigers' roster cuts are ramping up

The Detroit Tigers are starting to get their roster set. They only have 15 more cuts to make. Today, they made seven.

The Tigers announced that Alex Faedo and reliever Edwin Uceta would be sent to Triple-A Toledo. Relievers Kervin Castro, Miguel Diaz, and Miguel Del Pozo, as well as OF Brendon Davis and INF Jermaine Palacios have been assigned to minor league camp. There are 41 players left in major league camp.

Faedo is not surprising at all. He's had a pretty bad camp. He had a 11.81 ERA in 5.1 IP. His fastball velocity was down and it had no life. It was just a straight 92 mph. He clearly has a lot to work on.

What's interesting is that the Tigers plan on stretching him out as a starter in Triple-A, according to Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press. There had been a lot of speculation about the possibility of Faedo being converted into a reliever just because he struggled after the second time through the order last year.

The big surprise out of this group was Miguel Diaz. He's had a really solid spring. He hadn't allowed a run and struck out 12 in 6.1 IP. Opponents hit just .136 against him. He only walked three batters. I'd be very curious to hear the team's logic behind this one.

Another mild surprise is Jermaine Palacios. He's swung the bat pretty well, putting up a .819 OPS in 28 at-bats this spring. He did strike out 12 times, which is what probably led to his downfall.

We're getting close to the end of spring training. There's still a few roster battles left to settle. The bullpen in particular is something to keep a close eye on as the spring winds down.
