Detroit Tigers: Trey Wingenter getting another look in the bullpen
Detroit Tigers keep Trey Wingenter after doubleheader day.
Detroit Tigers keep Trey Wingenter in post-doubleheader roster move.
The Detroit Tigers got their taste of Shohei Ohtani as they took on the Angels in a straight-doubleheader on Thursday. Los Angeles got the best of Detroit in both games, and the team opted to make a roster move following the day's games.
Before the day began, the Detroit Tigers selected right-handed reliever Trey Wingenter as the team's 27th man to join the pitching staff as part of the doubleheader. Wingenter ended up being kept around post-game as the team sent Zach Logue down to Triple-A Toledo.
For Logue, things have not exactly gone well. He had allowed six earned runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings of work before giving up three runs over 4.0 innings of work on Thursday. Certainly not what the Tigers are hoping for from their pitching staff.
On the flip side of Logue being optioned, the Tigers had to fill the 26th spot on the roster, and that spot went to Wingenter as part of the moves from Thursday. Wingenter will join the bullpen, looking to try and settle back in after some time in Triple-A after it was announced he would stay with the Tigers moving forward.
In 2023, Wingenter has played in all of six games with the Tigers, where he accumulated 4.1 innings of relief work. Things did not go super well, as he has managed an 8.31 ERA with a 1.62 WHIP in those appearances.
He spent some time in the minors, where he logged 14 appearances with Toledo. He threw 13.2 innings and pitched to an 8.56 ER, also struggling to really get things going. For the Tigers, Wingenter serves as a depth addition.
For the Tigers, it may not be a crazy move at all, but the team is seemingly hoping that a fresh(er) arm in the bullpen might be beneficial for them as they continue to finish up things in 2023. The Tigers bullpen just needs to hope that Wingenter can find a groove and improve his performance from where he was in his first half-dozen games.
While Wingenter is not a top-tier bullpen arm for the Tigers, sometimes a stretch in the minors or a reset can do wonders. Even if it is just a few outings, anything will help. Wingenter is looking to find it on the mound, as he has struggled a bit to do so during his time in Detroit.
If things go poorly, he could very well become a DFA candidate, causing the Tigers to have to find new help for the bullpen.
