While it might seem a little crazy to believe after a difficult weekend in Chicago and bullpen-related roadblocks in Pittsburgh, the Detroit Tigers still have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs. And, once they cross that bridge, they also have a route to win the entire weakened American League if they can go on a run that reflects some of the other impressive numbers they've put up throughout the year.
As of this writing, the Tigers are 5.5 games back of the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central division. They are also caught in a cluster tied with the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Guardians, 1.5 back of the final Wild Card spot.
The path to the playoffs is right there, and there’s even a chance they don’t have to reach .500 on the year to make it to October baseball which would be remarkable.
Sneaking into the playoffs is one thing, but making it to the World Series is another thing altogether. The Tigers have the ability to outscore opponents, though, as their run differential is among the best of any American League team at +82. They should have about 11 more wins than their 61-66 record would suggest, holding the third-best run differential in the league behind fellow Wild Card powers the Yankees and Red Sox.
Not only that, but the Tigers’ starters have one of the best collective ERAs in the big leagues. Pitching wins championships, so if Detroit can make it into the dance, then their pitching could help them make a run.
Of course, the stars would have to align and everything would have to go right for Detroit, especially since the team traded away arguably its two best starters at the trade deadline in Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize.
Really, it’s just frustrating that the Tigers did not have a better first half. Injuries and bad luck hurt them, but they also just shot themselves in the foot too many times to make an argument that they should've bought rather than sell at the deadline.
It’s so easy to see a world in which the Tigers are leading the AL Central comfortably right now, having made a trade for an outfield bat at the deadline, and are thinking about making a deep playoff run.
Tigers still have a chance to make a playoff run, however small
Alas, what happened is over and now the Tigers have to deal with the cards as they were dealt. The season is far from done, and if the Tigers can play winning baseball the rest of the way, then anything can happen in October.
The Arizona Diamondbacks won 84 games in 2023, snuck into the Wild Card, and made it to the World Series. The Tigers themselves made a comeback for the ages in the standings back in 2024, so they know better than anyone that a magical run can come out of nowhere.
While the Tigers making a deep playoff run would be fairly shocking, the numbers suggest it’s far from impossible so if they can play the baseball they should have been playing at the start of the year the rest of the way, then maybe they can surprise everyone.
