When the Tigers called up Buddy Kennedy in late April last season, there wasn't all that much to be excited about yet. The Tigers were 11-9 through April 19 — fine, but not great — and already in third place in the AL Central. Tarik Skubal was looking good and there were still reasons to believe Detroit would keep up throughout the long season, but there wasn't anything major to write home about yet.
Kennedy, who the Tigers had picked up on waivers from the Cardinals in the offseason, felt like a breath of fresh air when he picked up just his second major league home run - and a two-run shot, at that - on April 21 to help the Tigers pick up a series win against the Twins (he also had an RBI sac fly earlier that game). A three-RBI day in his second game as a Tiger made fans maybe a little too eager to declare that Detroit had found a spark plug.
Of course, it didn't last long. Kennedy was sent down nine days after he was called up and DFA'ed in June.
Since then, he's jumped from the Phillies to the Blue Jays to the Dodgers and back to the Blue Jays again, where he's currently with Toronto's Triple-A team. But brief major league stints with both LA and Toronto mean that, no matter how the World Series shakes out, Kennedy's getting a ring.
Former Tigers one-hit wonder Buddy Kennedy is guaranteed to pick up a World Series ring with the Dodgers or Blue Jays
After the Tigers DFA'ed him, they traded Kennedy to the Phillies for cash, and he resurfaced on their major league roster for eight games in September. Then they DFA'ed him in March of this year, only to re-sign him to another minor league deal a few days later. He played in four major league games in June, was DFA'ed again and elected free agency, then signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays.
After two games in Toronto, he was DFA'ed for the third time this season, and the Dodgers picked him up on waivers to cover for Max Muncy at third for a spell, who was out with an oblique strain. As soon as Muncy was back, Kennedy racked up DFA No. 4 and went back to the Blue Jays on a minor league deal.
So he ended the regular season in the minors and hit .069 with a .259 OPS in 13 major league games for three different teams, but he's guaranteed a World Series ring no matter the outcome. Pretty good deal, all things considered.
