The Detroit waited until the very last minute, but were able to get a deal done with the Baltimore Orioles just before the MLB trade deadline expired at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Tigers gave their starting rotation a boost with the addition of veteran starting pitcher Charlie Morton.
Detroit is well out in front of the AL Central, and has one of the best records in all of baseball. But fans are still likely to be a little disappointed with the marginal upgrades Scott Harris and the Tigers front office made at this year's trade deadline.
Morton, 41, has not had a good season with the O's out in Baltimore. The veteran right-hander is 7-8 on the year with a rather unsightly 5.42 ERA. Morton has 101 punch outs this season in just over 100 innings pitched and a 1.559 WHIP. Detroit will be on the hook for the remainder of Morton's $15 million salary this season.
Tigers trade for playoff-tested veteran, deal former first-rounder at deadline buzzer
In addition to adding Morton to the Tigers' starting staff, Harris and Co. also found a taker for former first-round pick Matt Manning. The right-hander was part of another last minute trade with the Philadelphia Phillies. In return, Detroit is getting back minor league outfielder Josueth Quinonez. The 18-year-old prospect has yet to come state-side and is currently playing in the Domincan Summer League.
Manning was designated for assignment earlier this week after the Tigers needed to make room on the roster for the newly acquired Chris Paddack. Manning's career with Detroit will be defined by his shortcomings, having gone 11-15 with a 4.43 ERA in 50 career games with the Tigers.
No more trades can be made, and the Tigers now have their 26-man roster for the second-half of the season. Did they do enough at the deadline to give this team a chance to make some noise in the postseason? Only time will tell.
