Tigers could have tremendous buy-low trade opportunity with Diamondbacks
Jordan Montgomery's long foray into free agency ended when he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks just before Opening Day 2024. Some Detroit Tigers fans wanted to see their team make that signing, especially as the left-hander's price tag went down.
The $25 million deal didn't work out in Arizona's favor. Montgomery struggled and posted a 6.23 ERA over 117 innings of work. After 21 lackluster starts, the D-Backs moved the veteran to the bullpen for the first time since 2019.
Montgomery's contract also contains a vesting option for 2025, and after the Diamondbacks' owner lambasted him for last season's performance, he opted into the deal, seemingly out of spite. Arizona owes him $22.5 million after the worst campaign of his eight-year career.
But the Diamondbacks reportedly are open to trading the veteran, and they're willing to eat some of his salary to get it done. This could be an opportunity for the Tigers, could use him to bolster their pitching staff. After the down year, they could trade for him on the cheap and get some financial kickbacks.
Tigers Rumors: Jordan Montgomery could be ideal trade candidate
Montgomery was a career 3.68 ERA pitcher before his disastrous 2024 slate. Outside of a few shortened seasons, he'd been consistent on the mound for much of his service time and helped carry the 2023 Texas Rangers to the World Series.
The Athletic named the Tigers as a potential fit for Montgomery, as he hopes to bounce back. Detroit and president of baseball operations Scott Harris have been known to have success with rebound candidates. The Tigers' budget is usually tight, as they consistently have one of the lowest payrolls in MLB, and trading for Montgomery could be a great opportunity for a frugal team to nab some expensive talent. Of course, it'll only be a smart move if their coaching staff can help set Montgomery right again, which is never guaranteed.
For now, the Tigers only have Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, Reese Olson and Keider Montero in their rotation. They aren't expected to target any of the top-tier free agents (Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, etc.) and they aren't known for enticing contract offers, either. Trades always involve risk, but there's a clear way for Detroit to take advantage here to add depth and postseason experience.
