Tigers' cursed season epitomized by freak season-ending injury to recent signing

What did the Tigers do this winter to deserve such a tragic season?

The Detroit Tigers are suffering through a nightmare season in 2026. AJ Hinch's club is in the middle of a seven-game losing streak at the moment. They've lost 15 of 17 and find themselves tied for the second-worst record in Major League Baseball at 20-32. It's rock bottom.

At this point, even players they have little use for are dropping like flies. Paul DeJong, a recent minor league signing, recently suffered a season-ending hamstring injury while running the bases at Triple-A.

Misfortune and inexcusable performance have followed the Tigers everywhere they go this year. Detroit has been hit with a handful of injuries — including to its most valuable player Tarik Skubal, who's been on the IL since May 4 with loose bodies in his elbow — but don't let that distract you from the fact that plenty of guys who are healthy for the Tigers have been playing terrible baseball.

Tigers have nothing going their way, and Paul DeJong's injury proves it

Amid this rapid descent, the Tigers have already become virtual locks to sell at the deadline, with Skubal certainly factoring into that buzz. What was supposed to be Detroit's last chance to contend for a World Series with Skubal on the roster has turned into the opposite reality, and even savvy moves on the margins that Scott Harris is making can't stop the bleeding. The baseball gods just appear to hate this team right now, and there's nothing Harris, Hinch or anyone else can do about it.

As for DeJong, who was signed to a minor league deal on May 5, the front office was hoping for him to make his way toward an MLB impact in the coming weeks to help with a flailing depth chart ravaged by injuries.

The DeJong signing was a risk-free move for Harris that could've led to some productive offerings, except he wrecked his hamstring in a freak injury on May 12 and will now miss the remainder of the season as we learned this week.

X user @SeanPetkoff summed up the wild DeJong injury perfectly: "Dejong hurt before he even is a Tiger. What kind of voodoo magic is going on??"

If you want to focus on the bright side of a gloomy situation in Detroit, you can look at Riley Greene's awesome production at the plate this year, or the fact that the Tigers have landed on their next franchise centerpiece in Kevin McGonigle.

There are ingredients in the Tigers' clubhouse for a resurgence at some point this season, but it needs to happen soon. This campaign has nearly fallen off the tracks entirely, and the deadline suddenly seems way too fast approaching.
