News of Jack Flaherty's re-signing with the Tigers broke on Sunday, but Detroit waited to make it official, presumably because they needed to figure out who they were going to cut from their full 40-man roster to make room for him.

There weren't actually that many immediately obvious candidates for a DFA — Quad-A Mud Hen/Tiger Ryan Kreidler was probably the most at-risk of any of the position players. Kreidler is the Tigers' go-to option to fill in around the infield whenever anyone ends up on the IL but has failed to make an impact in the majors in the three years he's been a stopgap guy.

Alex Lange and Mason Englert were names that stood out as easy to let go of in the bullpen. Lange, a former first-round draft pick for the Cubs, was demoted and then injured for most of 2024, and Englert also spent the season going up and down and on and off the IL.

In the end, it was Englert, a former top-30 prospect for the Tigers, who got the bump from the roster. The Tigers DFA'ed him on Friday in order to make their Flaherty signing official.

Englert debuted in the Tigers' top 30, per MLB Pipeline, in 2023 at No. 26, with his changeup and overall control rating highest in his skillset. He relied on that changeup more than any other pitch during his 21 2/3 innings in the majors last year, and it got slugged (.429 slugging percentage against).

He started the season in Triple-A and was optioned and then recalled twice from late May to late June. When he ended up back in Toledo on June 25, he lasted just a few weeks before going onto the 7-day IL, which ended up keeping him out for over a month when you count his rehab assignment. The Tigers called him back up for the last time in late August, but he was sent back down again after a pretty nice two-inning outing against the Angels en route to a Tigers' victory.

Englert, like Alex Faedo before him, could make easy cash trade fodder, but it wouldn't be the worst thing if he ends up back with the Tigers organization. He's occasionally been brilliant in between some pretty terrible showings, and the Tigers could use him as a reserve option in the event of injury for another member of the bullpen.
