The Tigers have yet to make the first move of their trade deadline season, which is forecasted to be a lot more underwhelming than fans are hoping, but it's never a bad time to laugh at other team's mistakes and breathe sighs of relief when undesirable trade candidates come off the board.
On Friday afternoon, Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon was shipped off to the New York Yankees in exchange for two prospects, including No. 8-ranked pitcher Griffin Herring. The Tigers were loosely connected to McMahon as a potential solution for their eternal third base problem. But Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press shut that down on Friday morning, so now it's easy to laugh at the Yankees for massively overpaying for a player who can't even hit very well at Coors Field.
The Yankees were looking for a third base upgrade to replace Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas after DJ LeMahieu's DFA, and they were connected to Eugenio Suárez but instead got ... McMahon.
According to the Athletic's Chris Kirchner, Yankee Stadium's right field short porch might not even be of much help to him. If it was defense they were eyeing, maybe they should've just gone for the Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes.
Yankees make massive overpay for rumored Tigers trade target Ryan McMahon
McMahon batted .248 with a .856 OPS at Coors Field and .189 with a .589 OPS on the road in one of the more drastic examples of the Coors Effect one could find. He's a good defensive third baseman, sure, which the Yankees need after the debacle that was their seven-error series against the Blue Jays this week, but it already seems like his contributions on offense will be negligible.
And if the Tigers had given up a top-10 prospect for a guy like that? Fans would've rioted. Scott Harris, in all of his pragmatism, would never make a deal like that, which is at least slightly reassuring to Tigers fans.
The Diamondbacks could be asking for an absolute treasure trove for Suárez, or the Yankees just weren't willing to cough up a top-five prospect (maybe even two?) for him. In reality, it's probably a combination of both.
Regardless, the Yankees just made a trade that in all likelihood won't move the needle for them and they doomed a top-10 pitching prospect to the pitching wasteland that is Coors Field. Great job, Yanks. And enjoy paying McMahon $34 million through 2027.
