Tigers’ embarrassing All-Star Game track record is even worse than fans would think

Another midsummer classic wasted by the Tigers.

The Detroit Tigers and the Midsummer Classic don't always go together. Perhaps the most memorable Tigers All-Star failure came in 2009, when Brandon Inge was voted in by the fans and even participated in the Home Run Derby. Inge failed to hit a single home run at Busch Stadium, the same place the Tigers lost the 2006 World Series.

In the years since Miguel Cabrera retired, finding perennial All-Stars on the Detroit Tigers roster has been hard to come by. Minus Tarik Skubal, who has played in just as many All-Star Games as Cy Young awards won, the Tigers haven't exactly made their imprint on the Midsummer Classic of late. If anything, they've done the exact opposite.

Tigers failed miserably at the 2026 All-Star Game

Perhaps the only success story for the Tigers in Philadelphia involved Skubal, who didn't make an appearance. It turns out the Tigers aren't willing to shop Skubal just yet, as Detroit has the best record in the American League since June 1.

Rather, the actual four Tigers All-Stars in attendance failed to record a hit or pitch a single inning. Justin Verlander was around for the vibes and clubhouse presence. That shouldn't surprise anyone, as Verlander's in his final season and he's still trying to make his first appearance of the season at Comerica. The trio of Riley Greene, Kevin McGonigle and Dillon Dingler, all of whom deserve a ton of credit for the Tigers' first half turnaround, went a combined 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. It was a masterclass in ineptitude.

And as the tweet above showcases, this isn't the first time the Tigers All-Stars have put together a forgettable performance. In 2025, their four All-Star hitters went a combined 0-for-7 (perhaps a preview of what was to come in the postseason), while Skubal and Casey Mize gave up three earned runs. Yikes, indeed.

Heck, the last time a Tigers player had a hit in the MLB All-Star Game was 2017! Oh, Justin Upton, where have you gone? While All-Star Game results should be taken with a grain of salt, the Tigers' inability to produce one hitter who can have his moment against the league's best pitchers has to mean something, no?

Why can't Tigers players perform at the All-Star Game?

There is no easy answer to summarize the Tigers' All-Star Game struggles. Perhaps players aren't taking it as seriously as they should given MLB has the only All-Star showcase of the four major professional sports that actually matters. Injuries surely play a role, as we're nearly 100 games into a grueling 162-game slate.

This season in particular has been a challening one for Detroit. Skubal missed a month of action, along with the vast majority of the Tigers starting rotation. The lineup, minus the three stars invited to Philadelphia, took two months to wake up from their early-season slumber. The Tigers bullpen has also blown a staggering number of leads through mid-July. I could go on.

The Midsummer Classic is supposed to be an exciting time for every fanbase. All 30 teams are represented, and typically each player receives an at-bat or inning to showcase their abilities. For Tigers fans and players, that hasn't been the case for quite some time.
