Tigers fans embarrassed themselves with Mike Trout chant right before bullpen unraveled

Perhaps it's the last remnants of the 2012 AL MVP race, in which Miguel Cabrera beat out Mike Trout for the award thanks to his Triple Crown season, or maybe some Tigers fans stepped out of a time machine into the outfield at Comerica Park. We're lacking an explanation, but we do know the end result: an Angels win, and another blown lead by the Tigers bullpen.

But in what world is Trout overrated? Trout is the quietest superstar of his generation, but he's also arguably the best by several metrics, which makes it all the more confusing why Tigers fans opted to try and get in his head before a critical at-bat in the eighth inning.

Tigers fans are better than taunting an all-time great

Trout and the Tigers hardly have any serious history, and the reaction by fans around baseball to said heckling makes that all the more obvious. Back in 2012, when Miggy and Trout were battling for an AL MVP award, such a taunt would've made sense and perhaps helped sway fan opinion in Cabrera's favor. Now, it's just confusing, as Trout's impressive 2026 season (so far) could land him back on the AL All-Star team for the first time since 2023.

Chanting 'overrated' at a first-ballot Hall of Famer is sure to bring some bad juju with it. At the time, the Tigers were clinging to a one-run lead with relief pitcher Will Vest on the mound. Vest proceeded to walk Trout and give up a grand slam to Vaughn Grissom.

In a sense, this is a proper summary of the Tigers' season so far. Some early offense gave fans something to get excited about. They then proceeded to take out their frustration on the wrong source, and the bullpen blew a late lead (their 11th of the season so far). Sounds about right!

Mike Trout has his flaws, but he's not overrated

Trout's primary flaw is that he's struggled to stay healthy on the back nine of his career. That doesn't change the fact that from his age 20-27 seasons, he was undoubtedly the best player in the sport. Trout's career has been the story of peaks and valleys. He's a three-time AL MVP and arguably should have won more, depending on what side of the Trout-Cabrera debate you fall on. He's an 11-time All-Star and won Rookie of the Year in his first season by a wide margin.

He's also had little if any postseason success to speak of, and since 2021 has only played over 100 games twice.

The Angels, much like the Tigers, aren't going anywhere fast, so it's unlikely Trout changes his reputation barring a trade to a contender. However, that reputation shouldn't have the word 'overrated' attached.

The lack of creativity from Tigers fans on Tuesday night screams of a bored and desperate fanbase, which is appropriate given the on-field product they're forced to watch most nights at Comerica.
