Earlier this week, Detroit Tigers fans got some great news when second baseman Gleyber Torres was announced as the starting second baseman for the American League at the 2025 All-Star Game. Now they'll be hoping for a little bit more good news for Torres following a frightening collision at second base on Saturday night in Cleveland.
Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio appeared to inadvertently elbow Torres in the head while taking a throw from second baseman Angel Martinez. Torres remained on the ground as the first inning ended as the television broadcast went to commercials but was later shown walking off with the aid of a trainer following the break.
Torres left the game. Trey Sweeney entered at shortstop while Javier Baez moved over to second base.
The Tigers later announced the injury as a neck contusion. No further details or timeline were included.
Gleyber Torres has had a great season for the Tigers
Torres is enjoying his first season in Detroit this season, and the feeling is recripicol for Tigers fans. Torres entered play Saturday batting .279 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs in 76 games. His OPS of .809 puts him 30% above average, as measured by OPS+.
Torres is in Detroit on a one-year, but the fit with the team is already proving to be a good one, drawing some hope that Torres could sign an extension to remain with the team for a couple more.
