Hopefully, Tarik Skubal's mom wasn't watching on ESPN as her son pitched in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Field in Atlanta – not because of the two-run double he gave up to Ketel Marte in the first inning, but because of the choice word he uttered when he did.

Suffice it to say, Skubal's All-Star start didn't go as planned. After surrendering a pair of runs on three hits in a 19-pitch first inning against the National League squad, Skubal vented his frustrations in the form of an expletive – an expletive that made it onto the live FOX broadcast due to the fact that he was mic'd up for the entirety of his start.

Perhaps it was the microphone that rattled Skubal during an uncharacteristically rough start for the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. He allowed a leadoff hit to Shohei Ohtani and an infield single to Ronald Acuna Jr. before Ketel Marte then made him pay with a double down the right-field line to score both runners.

Skubal bounced back and recorded three straight outs to end the inning, including back-to-back strikeouts of Manny Machado and Will Smith, but the damage had already been done.

Skubal had another unique – and more family-friendly – moment during his mic'd-up start when he became the first player in MLB All-Star history to challenge a call using the ABS balls and strikes system, getting a called ball turned into a strike.

"You take them any way you can get them, boys," Skubal said on the broadcast.

Tarik Skubal not the only Tigers player to struggle at 2025 MLB All-Star Game

The Tigers sent six players to the All-Star Game, including four starters: Skubal, second baseman Gleyber Torres, left fielder Riley Greene and center fielder Javier Báez. Unfortunately, not a single one of them had a positive performance.

The position players, along with designated hitter Zach McKinstry finished a combined 0-for-8 with three strikeouts, while right-handed pitcher Casey Mize surrendered one earned run in the sixth inning to add to Skubal's two in the first.

The American League went on to erase a six-run deficit and tie the game, but the National League ultimately won in the Home Run Derby-style tiebreaker.
