When a would-be contender fails to live up to expectations, it's natural for any fanbase to blame the manager first and foremost. This is doubly true when that manager is established, like AJ Hinch of the Detroit Tigers. It's been a brutal season in Motown, highlighted by injuries to Tarik Skubal and devastating blows up and down a talented roster.
Tigers fans have had it with Hinch, whose team was just swept by the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians on Thursday. Hinch played every card in his deck in Tuesday night's game, even hitting Riley Greene fifth against a lefty (despite his 1.064 OPS against left-handed pitching this season), and pinch-hitting for former No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson in a big moment. He is scrambling with few solutions left.
Tigers fans are fed up with manager AJ Hinch as slide continues
Fair or not, Tigers fans have had enough of what they perceive as Hinch's over-managing. Batting Greene fifth is a prime example of this. The 25-year-old has been the Tigers best hitter so far this season, and placing him lower in the lineup provided him with fewer chances to do damage against Guardians pitching on Tuesday night.

1 problem: He's crushed lefties this year hitting .378 with a 1.064 OPS

When asked about his technique postgame, all Hinch could muster was some praise for Cleveland, and acknowledgement that the Tigers are no longer in control of their AL Central destiny.
“We know the division runs through Cleveland,” Hinch said, per MLive. “As much as we want to say otherwise, they’ve done it. And so we have to take that personally and overcome them in order to get where we want to get to. That’s the brutal truth.”
That's not exactly what Tigers fans want to hear right now, but it's also the truth. Hinch's Tigers blew a 15.5-game lead to the Guardians last season, and Cleveland has picked up right where they left off. The manager deserves some blame for his players' failure to execute both down the stretch and the beginning of this season, but he is not alone.

Why Tigers fans blaming AJ Hinch alone is shortsighted
The Tigers had a lot go wrong in 2025. Whether it be poor execution by the vast majority of their lineup or the complete collapse of a number of starting pitchers in the second half, there's only so much Hinch can do to course correct. Not to mention, this is a completely different season, and the Tigers have not found a cure for their injury bug.
Most MLB teams are not built to withstand an injury to their ace, especially an elbow issue that keeps them out 2-3 months. The Tigers did their best to prepare for what now seems inevitable — Skubal's looming exit — by signing Framber Valdez. Jack Flaherty remains in the rotation as well, but has taken a massive step back in 2026. Add in injuries to Gleyber Torres and Javier Baez, both of whom remain on the IL as of this writing, and Hinch's lineup card is lacking much punch beyond Greene and Kevin McGonigle.
Hinch is doing the most he can with the roster provided for him. The Tigers are built to win now, but early-season injuries have put them behind the eight ball. It's only May, though, and there's still plenty of time for Hinch to prove why he's one of the more well-compensated managers in the sport.
Were he to panic just 50 games into the season, then Tigers fans would have a real reason to be concerned.
