Tigers’ farm system must start rivaling Dodgers hype after clear-cut success stories

No one was surprised that the Los Angeles Dodgers ponied up for Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline because they have one of the best farm systems in baseball, but the haul that the Detroit Tigers received in return puts them in elite company.

Before the trade deadline, the Tigers’ farm system was ranked in the 10-20 range by most publications, but following the Skubal and Casey Mize trades, it’s clear that they have one of the best crops of young players in the league.

This has been known, yet it doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Detroit is now tied with the Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles with a league-leading six top-100 prospects.

The Dodgers have long been praised for their farm system, but after producing clear-cut MLB starters and loading up on prospects at the deadline, the Tigers need to be considered on the same level. The Dodgers are looked at like an organization with an embarrassment of riches all the way down to their Single-A affiliate, but Detroit isn’t far behind.

In fact, the Tigers have produced guys like Kevin McGonigle, Dillon Dingler, Troy Melton, Jackson Jobe, Keider Montero, Reese Olson, and most recently Hao-Yu Lee, Max Clark, and Eduardo Valencia. These guys are the future of the organization and they’re taking over the major league club.

That’s not even mentioning that Detroit also has the No. 3 farm system in baseball after the trade deadline, via FanGraphs.

Detroit’s farm system has produced several All-Star caliber players over the past few years and Scott Harris is doing a better job than fans give him credit for in terms of building up the farm system so there’s no shortage of talent coming through the minors.

Comparing the Tigers’ and Dodgers’ success stories

As previously mentioned, here are the Tigers’ recent success stories are as follows:

• Kevin McGonigle
• Dillon Dingler
• Troy Melton
• Jackson Jobe
• Keider Montero
• Reese Olson

It’s still a little early to call Lee, Clark, and Valencia success stories because they’re new to the major league club. They still have some proving to do.

As for the Dodgers, here’s who has risen through their system in recent years, rivaling the Tigers:

• Dalton Rushing
• Andy Pages
• Justin Wrobleski
• Gavin Stone
• Edgardo Henriquez
• Emmet Sheehan (at least the 2025 version)

You could argue that a lot more top prospects have not panned out for the Dodgers in recent years, at least not with the Dodgers. They’ve traded away top prospects like Michael Busch and Miguel Vargas over the past few years and they’re still waiting for former No. 1 prospect Roki Sasaki to pan out.

Detroit has had a lot more recent success with its farm system over the past few years than Los Angeles, but you don’t hear the talking heads mentioning that.

It’s only a matter of time before that translates to consistent World Series contention.
