There was a brief delay during the Detroit Tigers' series finale against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday when a member of the grounds crew at Comerica Park suffered an apparent injury while raking the infield dirt between innings.
As the game was paused after the seventh inning stretch and medics and team training staff came to the grounds crew member's aid, it quickly became clear that he did not appreciate all the attention.
Upon realizing that one of the FanDuel Sports Network cameras was filming him while he was in distress, the injured grounds crew member flipped his middle finger right at the camera to express his displeasure. The obscene gesture was unmistakeable, and the broadcast actually stayed on it for about four seconds before eventually switching to a different shot.
The injured groundskeeper was eventually carted off the field after a brief delay, and the game resumed. The Tigers went on to complete the series sweep of the Giants with a 4-3 win. While there has been no update yet on the man's injury status, here's hoping he has a speedy recovery (and a job still after flipping the bird on live TV).
Tigers complete comeback in series finale to complete sweep vs Giants
The Tigers trailed the Giants, 3-0, when starting pitcher Jackson Jobe exited with two outs in the fifth inning, but Detroit's bats came alive in the bottom of the frame.
The Tigers scored all four of their runs in the fifth courtesy of Colt Keith’s two-run double and Justyn-Henry Malloy’s two-out, two-run single. Their bullpen also picked up the slack after Jobe was chased, as Brenan Hanifee earned the win and Tommy Kahnle picked up his seventh save. Kahnle stranded a pair of runners with no outs in the eighth inning and pitched a perfect ninth to seal the win for the Tigers.
But the afternoon wasn't all that pleasant. The injury to the grounds crew member was a bummer, and then Jobe did not speak to reporters after the game. He wasn't even seen in the clubhouse. Then, the Tigers violated MLB's rules by revoking reporter access within an hour of the game ending as those in attendance were waiting to speak with Jobe. The right-hander's velocity was down 1.5-2 MPH during his outing, which now has some speculating about an injury. Given the team's behavior after the game as well, it's hard not to wonder.
Nonetheless, the American League-leading Tigers swept their series against the Giants and closed out their homestand with a four-game win streak. After an off day Thursday, Detroit is scheduled to hit the road and begin a three-game series Friday against the Kansas City Royals, but everyone will be waiting to hear more about Jobe in the coming days.
