Detroit Tigers fans hoping to see Parker Meadows manning center field for the club on Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers received a bit of bad news on Friday.
According to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News, manager A.J. Hinch revealed that Meadows – who has been shut down for nearly three weeks due to a nerve issue in his right arm – would not be ready to begin the season on time. While Meadows is "improving steadily," McCosky noted, there is not enough time left in spring training to get him back up to speed by March 27.
The update came just days after Meadows told reporters he was optimistic about his availability for Opening Day. He is continuing to hit and do some glove work in spring training; but the injury to Meadows' musculocutaneous nerve – while not expected to cause any permanent damage – is impacting his ability to throw and keeping him from being a full participant in camp activities.
Hinch did not provide an exact timetable for Meadows' eventual season debut, which leaves room for optimism that his stint on the injured list could be a short one. Still, it's a tough blow to a Tigers outfield that has already been rocked by injuries this spring.

On a somewhat more positive note, Tigers outfielder Wenceel Pérez – who has been sidelined for a week with lower back tightness – received a cortisone injection in his back to address the lingering discomfort after a couple of failed attempts to return to game action earlier this week. He is expected to return to completing full camp activities.
According to McCosky, the Tigers are optimistic that Pérez will be ready for Opening Day, assuming he can avoid any further complications. This would be fantastic news for the club, who will likely be without both Meadows and Matt Vierling to open the 2025 season and will therefore be relying on Pérez to take on a more significant role in the outfield.
