Kerry Carpenter has been on the Tigers' IL since July 27 with plantar fasciitis. Although he had been completing a return to play progression, the team sent him to a foot specialist on Monday for more evaluation. By Tuesday, the medical report was updated to confirm that he was being shut down for the team being.

Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reported that the Tigers were still optimistic he would make it back this season ... but the team may not actually need him.

Carpenter was hitting .208 with a .692 OPS before he got hurt, and he was in a .169/.505 slump over his last 30 games before he went onto the IL for the second time this season. Max Clark has since come up, giving the TIgers both a better outfield glove and a higher-upside lefty bat.

Still, the Tigers would love to get back the ever-clutch Kerry Bonds sometime in September, especially if they're situated in or still on the verge of a playoff spot.

Brant Hurter lasts just 2/3 innings in latest rehab outing in Triple-A

Another notable lefty the Tigers have been missing, Hurter has been on the IL since late May with lumbar spine inflammation. The team clearly knew it was serious quickly; he was transferred to the 60-day IL just five days after the initial move.

He began a rehab assignment in Single-A Lakeland on Aug. 4 and was transferred to Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 8. The team has been content to keep him there for what will probably end up being the maximum stint, but he might also be facing an option to keep him in Toledo instead of returning to the major league club.

In his latest outing, a start, he gave up a run in the first inning and then loaded the bases, which got him pulled after recording just two outs. The poor showing came four days after a 2/3-inning, five-run appearance.

Wenceel Pérez, James Outman continuing progressions in Toledo

Pérez is on the IL with a left orbital fracture after a freak postgame workout accident in mid-June, and Outman with a concussion sustained on a hit by pitch last week. Pérez began a rehab assignment earlier this month but was quickly taken off of it after he and the team realized his vision wasn't yet back to 100%.

Both are in Toledo this week while the Tigers are on a six-game road trip to Pittsburgh and Kansas City, but neither are ready to start — or in Pérez's case restart — rehab assignments.
