It's been exactly one month since Parker Meadows last appeared in a game for the Detroit Tigers, but the team has finally cleared him to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo.
The center fielder, who is recovering from a right quad strain, passed a full-speed running test on Tuesday to clear the final hurdle before beginning his minor league rehab stint. Per a report from Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, Meadows is set to play Toledo's Wednesday home game against St. Paul (Minnesota Twins).
There is still no timeline for Meadows' return to the Tigers, as manager AJ Hinch told reporters the plan is to go "day by day" to see how much he can handle. Meadows also missed the first 60 games of the season after suffering a musculocutaneous nerve injury in his right arm during spring training, so the Tigers may take a more cautious approach in getting him back up to game speed so as not to risk further injury.
Meadows is hitting .200 with two home runs, 12 walks and 40 strikeouts in 38 games for the Tigers in 2025, posting a .566 OPS. He has been worth -2 defensive runs saved across 305 1/3 innings in center field in what many hoped would be a breakout season for the 25-year-old before it was derailed by injuries.
Tigers Injury Update: Paul Sewald, Jason Foley making progress
Right-handed reliever Paul Sewald, whom the Tigers acquired from the Cleveland Guardians at the trade deadline, completed his second bullpen session while recovering from a right shoulder strain. The 35-year-old will be eligible to come off the injured list on Sept. 10, and he is expected to join the Tigers during the final month of the season.
Another right-handed reliever, Jason Foley, began a return-to-play throwing progression this week after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in May. Foley, the Tigers' primary closer in 2024, never pitched for the club this season after he was surprisingly left off the Opening Day roster. He made six appearances with Triple-A Toledo before the injury ended his season early.
Though he has already been ruled out for the rest of the 2025 campaign, Foley is expected to have a healthy offseason and be ready to go for spring training.
