Tigers manager AJ Hinch provided something of a nothingburger update on long-awaited and long-hurt center fielder Parker Meadows' status on Sunday, after Meadows had played eight games in Single-A and Triple-A on a rehab assignment. Hinch said, "I talked to him late last night to get a little bit more feedback on him. He's doing really well. We'll have a plan to make sure."
That told fans basically less than zero about when we should expect to see Meadows back in the lineup (what is "a plan to make sure," exactly?), but it turns out that it didn't actually matter. On Monday afternoon, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported that Meadows was expected to return to the team for their opener against the White Sox, and the team itself confirmed the move just minutes later.
Justyn-Henry Malloy was the unfortunate victim of the 26-man roster crunch, and pitcher Ryan Cusick — who was literally just claimed off of waivers from the Athletics on Saturday — was DFA'ed to clear space on the 40-man roster.

INF/OF Justyn-Henry Malloy was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following yesterday’s game.
To make room for Meadows on the 40-man roster, RHP Ryan Cusick has been designated for assignment.

Even with the shocking emergence of Javier Báez as an above-average center fielder, the Tigers have been anxiously awaiting the return of Meadows, who's only been able to show flashes of what he might be capable of since he made his debut in 2023. He was notably demoted early last May, when he was batting under .100 to start the season, but he returned with a bang in July, only to get hurt and miss another month.
When he was finally able to settle back in, he batted .296 with an .840 OPS in August and September, and then .269/.806 in the postseason. He was the Tigers' clear Opening Day center fielder, and then he got hurt in spring training.
Center field has been in some flux throughout the season, with Báez, Wenceel Pérez, and even Riley Greene getting starts there lately, but Meadows' return will lend stability to the outfield and allow Greene to play left field unencumbered. His return also provides much-needed depth after Matt Vierling came off the IL and immediately went back onto it.
Hopefully, things will stick for Meadows throughout the rest of the season on both the performance and health fronts. And the Tigers have given him a soft place to land, with a best-in-baseball winning percentage and a series against the White Sox ahead.
