What's better than one ace? TWO aces!

As an organization on the brink of contention, the Detroit Tigers are entering a critical offseason. Their magical run in 2024 came to an end in the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians, but it showed us that they really are just a couple of pieces away from being legitimate contenders in 2025 and beyond.

The Tigers have one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball under team control for two more seasons in Tarik Skubal, but otherwise had to rely heavily on bullpen games down the final stretch of the season and into the playoffs, which is hardly a recipe for sustained success. It's clear that Detroit needs another starter; but what if that starter was the top free-agent arm on the market this offseason?

The idea may not be as far-fetched as it sounds. According to MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand, the Tigers could be a potential suitor for 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes in free agency.

"Detroit made an unlikely return to the postseason in 2024, and while the Tigers have an ace in Cy Young finalist Tarik Skubal, he’s only under control for two more years before he becomes a free agent," Feinsand wrote. "Adding a top arm such as Burnes would give the Tigers a lethal 1-2 punch atop the rotation, and if they can get Skubal signed long term, the pair would help keep Detroit in contention annually."

Burnes finished last season with a 15-9 record, a 2.92 ERA, 1.096 WHIP, and 181 strikeouts over 194 1/3 innings pitched for the Baltimore Orioles. He's in for a major payday in free agency this offseason, likely north of $200 million.

In the event that Burnes decides not to stay with the Orioles and maximize his earning potential on the open market, the Tigers would face some fierce competition from teams with exceptionally deep pockets. They would need to be willing to pay up, which would likely limit what they can do in the rest of free agency.

But with a chance to have two of the most talented arms in baseball atop their rotation, the opportunity cost of acquiring Burnes could end up being well worth it for the Tigers if Scott Harris is able to spend.
