Tigers make bombshell prospect promotion as Tarik Skubal trade rumors swirl

There certainly is going to be shuffling across the Detroit Tigers' roster ahead of the trade deadline on Monday, and the movement is starting with the promotion of a top prospect. Baseball America's Emily Waldon reports the Tigers are calling up Max Clark ahead of their weekend series against the Athletics.

The Tigers are off on Friday, so a corresponding move doesn't need to be announced until Friday. Clark's reported promotion comes at a time when there's been an overwhelming belief that Tarik Skubal could be traded at any moment.

Clark drew fanfare and criticism during spring training, but the largest takeaway was that the Tigers were going to be cautious with his development. Considering the timing of his promotion, the indication could be that the Tigers are getting ready to shift their focus from contending this season to putting the roster in a position to find success in the years to follow.

Through 413 plate appearances with Triple-A Toledo this season, Clark is carrying an OPS of .795 with 10 home runs. He's had the extended runway that Scott Harris called for at the start of the season, and given what lies ahead for the Tigers, he's now going to be given some runway at the big-league level.

After a deflating 10-9 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, reality seems to be settling in regarding Skubal's future in Detroit. Skubal was excellent in what was likely his final start with the Tigers, but the loss leaves a clear impression that he will be dealt before Monday's deadline.

Clark will likely see a healthy amount of playing time in center field upon his arrival. It's important to remember that even if the Tigers do trade Skubal, there remains a path to where they could still reach the postseason. The American League, as a whole, is down this season, leaving room for Detroit to make a late-seaoson push in both the division and wild card race.

For that reason, chances are the Tigers won't just hand the keys to a starting role in the outfield to Clark. He will need to earn it, and likely split playing time with Javier Baez after his return from injury earlier this week. Nonetheless, the intention moving forward is clear, 2026 isn't the only thing on the front office's mind.
