In a dramatic turn of events for the Detroit Tigers on Monday, within a half hour of Tarik Skubal being scratched from his start for what were initially described as precautionary reasons, the Tigers confirmed that Skubal required surgery to clean up loose bodies in his elbow. In the immediate aftermath of Skubal's injury, the Tigers are turning to a former top pitching prospect.

Ty Madden has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take Skubal's spot on the Tigers' 26-man roster. Madden was the No. 32 selection in the 2021 draft, and during his early years in Detroit's system, he was routinely believed to be one of the team's top prospects.

Madden made his debut with the Tigers in 2024, appearing in six games while pitching to a 4.30 ERA. He was largely used as a bulk option out of the bullpen, but there was an expectation that he could move into the starting rotation for the 2025 season. Instead, a rotator cuff injury in spring training wiped out his entire season.

Tigers begin life without Tarik Skubal, call up top prospect Ty Madden

Given the injury, the shine of Madden's prospect profile has certainly worn off. He's healthy, which is a step in the right direction, but the 26-year-old remains a work in progress. After starting the season as a piggyback option in the Mud Hens' bullpen, Madden was moved into the rotation. The former top pitching prospect has an ERA of 4.30 in 21 innings pitched.

It's a year later than most anticipated, but Madden finally has the runway to stick in the Tigers' rotation. Given that it's only the first week of May, internal options like Madden are what Detroit will need to lean on before trade talks pick up at the end of June and into July.

Madden is likely the first of what will be a revolving door of options the Tigers sift through as they navigate life with Skubal for the next couple of months. Three-fifths of Detroit's Opening Day starting rotation is currently on the IL. Justin Verlander threw a bullpen session over the weekend and likely will need a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated off the IL.

The silver lining is that by most metrics, the Tigers' offense has been the crutch keeping Detroit afloat this season. The hope is that it continues and the pitching staff can tread water until Skubal returns. If not, the season would have taken a turn that no one could have predicted.
