Alex Bregman continues to languish on the free agent market, and though one team has the financial means to put an end to the drama, they're not taking the reins. The Boston Red Sox — one of the financial powerhouses in the sport — are refusing to meet Bregman's demands. That's good news for Detroit Tigers fans, but Scott Harris needs to act quickly.

The Red Sox are reportedly unwilling to offer Bregman more than a four-year contract. While Boston remains interested in signing the All-Star infielder, Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow has made it clear he has drawn a line in the sand.

Tigers Rumors: Detroit must capitalize after Red Sox refuse to offer Alex Bregman more than a four-year contract

Bregman has been seeking a deal worth at least $200 million. Unfortunately for the veteran, he's clearly overplayed his hand and the powers that be have called his bluff. His $200 million aspirations are unlikely to be matched, but that doesn't mean he can't land a quality contract this winter. This is where the Tigers come in.

The Tigers, Red Sox, and Houston Astros are the three organizations known to be in the market for Bregman's services. The New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays have been tossed around as well, but Detroit, Boston, and Houston are the top suitors this offseason.

Bregman is said to be weighing multiple five-year offers, but that obvious doesn't include the Red Sox. Most baseball fans know the Astros had extended a contract to Bregman earlier this offseason, and it's said to be in the range of a six-year, $156 million deal. At this point, it would seem that this may now be a two-horse race between the Tigers and Astros.

Houston cleared some payroll over the weekend after trading closer Ryan Pressly, and Bregman's longtime teammate Jose Altuve has even offered to switch positions if it meant the Gold Glove third baseman would return to H-Town. Those are strong connections that will be difficult for the Tigers to break.

But one thing that could put Detroit over the top is money. While the Tigers are obviously aprehensive about spending big this offseason, if Detroit can outbid Houston, there's a great chance that Bregman will decide to bolt the Lone Star State for a reunion with his former manager AJ Hinch.

But this is no time to be passive. If the Tigers truly want to add Bregman to the roster, Detroit must make their last, best, and final offer, and hope that it's better than every other team pursuing his services this offseason.
