Gleyber Torres exited the Tigers' Monday night game against the Astros in the second inning, after he swung at a first pitch fastball and winced before stepping out of the box and asking for time. AJ Hinch and Tigers trainers attended to him before he was pulled and replaced by Hao-Yu Lee in the lineup.
Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press wrote that it's a "general side injury," but specifics are still unknown.
"I don’t know if it’s related to what he previously had," Hinch said, presumably referring to the sports hernia that he underwent surgery to treat in the offseason, "but I saw his reaction in the box. So when I went out, I just asked him what was going on, and he said it was uncomfortable. So that was an easy decision [to take him out]."
Torres has already spent a month on the IL this year with an oblique strain. He's been a ringer at the plate ever since he returned at the beginning of June — .341 average, .998 OPS — but the Tigers' roster is proving itself uniquely snakebitten once again.
Tigers News: Mets claim Zack Short off of waivers after Detroit's DFA
If we had a nickel for every time the Mets had claimed Zack Short off of waivers from the Tigers, we'd have two nickels — which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
The Mets seem to have the same strange fascination with Short that the Tigers do. When Detroit let him go after the 2023 season, the Mets picked him up, and he even made their Opening Day roster. After they let him go, he bounced around between four other organizations before ending up back with the Tigers. And now the Mets.
Tigers fans were never able to wrap our heads around Scott Harris and front office's fixation on Short, but we're just relieved that he's the Mets' problem now.
Tigers News: Troy Melton hoping to avoid an IL stint after Monday scratch
More bad injury news (because the Tigers definitely need more of that): Troy Melton was scratched ahead of Monday's game with back tightness. He said he woke up with discomfort and nothing he did before first pitch could alleviate it.
The Tigers are hopeful that he'll be able to make his next start, but he'll remain day-to-day until the weekend, when he should make his next appearance against the White Sox.
