The Tigers' season was all but over by the time Troy Melton went onto the IL with forearm tightness, but it still felt like whatever god of bad luck that had bullied Detroit all year was getting the last laugh.

Melton's performance had dipped significantly that month before he exited a September 20 start against the White Sox after just 3 2/3 innings. The sub-2.00 ERA he maintained through most of his prior 16 starts went out the window as soon as September 1, when he gave up five earned runs (seven total) in 5 1/3 innings.

He also had a recent history of injury, having made his season debut on May 24 after reporting elbow inflammation in spring training. The immediate fear for Tigers fans was that the same issue was flaring up again and could lead to Tommy John.

However, on Thursday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reported that Melton had undergone further testing and no structural issues had been found. He'll work through his usual offseason routine, and Tigers fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

We're not used to getting good news when it comes to injuries, so we'll take this one gladly.

With Melton fine, at least for now, the Tigers' 2027 rotation really only has to wonder about Reese Olson, who missed all of 2026 after a shoulder surgery. Even if Olson isn't available by Opening Day, the Tigers will have Framber Valdez, Melton, Jackson Jobe, River Ryan, and potentially Drew Anderson, if the Tigers exercise his club option, or Keider Montero.

One of the more interesting questions the Tigers have to answer heading into 2027 is rotation hierarchy. In Valdez, Melton, Jobe, and Ryan, they have a veteran who was once one of the best lefties in the game, a starter who put the rotation on his back after Tarik Skubal was traded, a third overall pick, and a much-hyped piece of the Skubal trade.

The Tigers are certainly hoping that this will represent a rotation absolutely chock full of aces. But the waters get murkier when Valdez underperformed in 2027, Jobe is still finding his feet after Tommy John, and Ryan is all but a stranger to us for now.

Valdez was signed to be the Tigers' ace after Skubal left, but the dynamic has shifted over the course of just one season. It wouldn't be altogether surprising if Melton assumes the mantle despite the money attached to Valdez.
