Through June 30, the Tigers have the best record in baseball (tied with the Dodgers), but it's been an incredible year for the organization as a whole.
Three of the Tigers' affiliates — the Double-A Erie SeaWolves, High-A West Michigan Whitecaps, and Single-A Lakeland Flying Tigers have the best records in their respective divisions, and there are exciting things happening across the organization.
Tigers' Jace Jung has revamped his swing in Triple-A
It's been about a month and a half since Jace Jung was demoted back to Triple-A after batting .111 with a .356 OPS in 18 major league games, and he hasn't looked great in the minors either. His Triple-A average has sunk to .217, though he does have a much better .779 OPS and is still walking at an impressive clip. Still, it's far from enough for the Tigers to bring him back to the majors.
Jung is hoping that a new swing might fix that. Per Lynn Henning, writing for the Detroit News (subscription required), Jung took some guidance from AJ Hinch to heart after his last major league game so far this season and has moved his hands down to be more direct to pitches. He's still working out the kinks (he's still striking out way too much) but is trusting the process and leaning on Mud Hens batting coach Mike Hessman.
Double-A Erie SeaWolves debut late night host John Oliver's rebrand
On May 18, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver announced that the Erie SeaWolves were chosen to be the recipients of an offer for a full rebrand, which went viral a few weeks prior. The SeaWolves had no say in the creative process, but Oliver promised to make it good.
On Sunday, Oliver unveiled details on the latest episode of his show. The SeaWolves will (occasionally) become the Erie Moon Mammoths, inspired by scuba diver George Moon, who found a mammoth bone while diving in Erie County's own Lake Pleasant in 1991, which led to the discovery of 80% of the animal's skeleton. Merchandise is already available for preorder, and the SeaWolves/Moon Mammoths will debut full uniforms on July 19.
Kevin McGonigle's hot streak is a good sign for Tigers
Tigers' No. 2 prospect Kevin McGonigle continues to draw eyes since his promotion to High-A West Michigan. He's batting .373 with a 1.135 OPS in 31 games and was just named to the All-Star Futures Game alongside Max Clark and Josue Briceño.
At this point, McGonigle is barreling toward another promotion before the end of the season. In his last three games, he has a double, a homer, four RBI, and literally hasn't struck out once. He went 4-for-6 at the plate on Sunday night with five total bases. Although he went down with an ankle sprain from early April to late May, he returned like nothing happened.
