Detroit Tigers prospect Josue Briceño pulled off a remarkable feat on Thursday, doing something that hasn't been done in the Major or minor leagues since they began archiving stats in 2005 and 1901, respectively.
The 20-year-old crushed three home runs and a double to collect five RBI for High-A West Michigan in a 14-1 win over Dayton. He capped off his historic night by stealing home in the same game.
Briceño, the Tigers' No. 4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has enjoyed a breakout campaign to this point in his first season in High-A. He is slashing .268/.383/.610 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI in 149 trips to the plate, along with 29 strikeouts to 24 walks.
Briceño's strong start to the season is a continuation of his dominant performance in the Arizona Fall League, where he became the first player in AFL history to hit for a Triple Crown by slashing .433/.509/.867 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI in just 25 games.
Briceño currently ranks as the No. 85 prospect in all of baseball, but expect to see him rapidly climb the ranks in the near future if he keeps hitting like this.
Tigers Prospect Update: RJ Petit dominates in May, Kevin McGonigle heats up in return
Briceño's teammate at West Michigan, Tigers' No. 2 prospect Kevin McGonigle, has also been heating up of late since his return from an ankle injury. The 20-year-old has only appeared in 12 games this season (and just six at High-A), but he has five hits in his last seven at-bats. In his six games for West Michigan, McGonigle is now slashing an impressive .368/.520/.684 with seven hits and four RBI. Six of his seven hits have been doubles.
Elsewhere in Detroit's farm system, MLB Pipeline tabbed towering right-hander RJ Petit as the Tigers' hottest pitching prospect for the month of May. The 6-foot-8 reliever hasn't allowed a run in seven games dating back to April 25, fanning 16 across 12 1/3 innings of work at Double-A Erie. The 25-year-old Petit could very well be in line for a promotion to Triple-A Toledo after his dominant month, which would help him rise the ranks from the No. 28 prospect in the organization.
