On Tuesday, the Tigers announced they had fired Triple-A manager Gabe Alvarez for a "violation of club policy."

It was a shocking move for the Tigers that reverberated throughout baseball, as Alvarez had been seen as a future MLB manager. AJ Hinch and other Tigers brass refused to comment on the issue apart from saying they were confident in interim skipper Mike Hessman's ability to lead the Mud Hens.

Theories ran rampant. Betting was one of them, but fans had a sinking feeling that it was something worse. On Wednesday, Jeff Passan reported that Alvarez had sent an inappropriate text to a female colleague.

He released a statement to ESPN in the aftermath of his dismissal. "I sent a single text message to a colleague that I intended as a lighthearted joke," he said. "Shortly after sending it, I recognized that the message was inappropriate and did not reflect the values and judgment I strive to uphold, and I immediately reached out to clarify my intent.

"I never intended to cause discomfort or offense, and I regret that the message created this situation. This was an isolated incident and not reflective of my long-standing record of professionalism, respect for colleagues, and conduct over the course of my career."

Tigers Triple-A manager Gabe Alvarez fired for latest instance of sexual misconduct

This is just the latest in a string of harassment allegations leveled at powerful figures within the Tigers organization. Last year, assistant GM Sam Menzin resigned after sending multiple subordinates unsolicited lewd photos. Broadcaster Craig Monroe was dismissed in 2024 for allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. Multiple Ilitch Sports &+ Entertainment executives have been accused and/or removed on similar grounds.

The organization is clearly sensitive to these allegations in light of their recent history. Alvarez reportedly sent the text on Monday, and was reported and fired the next day.

This doesn't seem like a case of a few bad apples, though. A follow-up exposé focusing on IS+E revealed that after president and CEO Ryan Gustafson wrote that he was "grateful" to employees who spoke out, a longtime employee was pushed out after raising concerns about vice president of game presentation and fan experience Matt Coy.

Alvarez's language — "a single text message" — is deliberately minimizing. Luckily, the Tigers responded quickly and justly, but this is starting to look like a systemic issue that goes all the way from ownership to the front office to the field of play.
