A bit premature.

The Detroit Tigers are trying to sort out their pitching staff in spring training and they made a bit of a surprising decision by sending former top prospect Ty Madden to minor league camp. It feels like a bit of a premature decision and takes away a chance for Madden to prove himself a bit more.

The 26-year-old was drafted back in 2021 by the Tigers. He was thought of as an arm with a lot of promise and he made his big league debut with the team in 2024, but injuries have prevented him from progressing along the trajectory he would have liked.

In six appearances with Detroit back in 2024, Madden had a 4.30 ERA in 23 innings pitched. He was far from perfect, but he showed promise in his big league debut even if there was still plenty of room for growth.

Ty Madden's demotion robs him of chance to prove himself at Tigers spring training

Madden did not pitch last season, as he was placed on the 60-day injured list in March with a rotator cuff strain that kept him out for all of 2025. It's a shame — if healthy, last year would have been his chance to take a step forward and prove that he is a guy who belongs in the rotation.

Instead, Madden now finds himself a spring training afterthought almost immediately. The Tigers have to make cuts and even if Madden was a long shot to make the Opening Day roster, now he will not be able to impress manager A.J. Hinch and the rest of the coaching staff with how he looks down in Florida.

He had just one spring outing and pitched two solid innings. He didn't allow a baserunner and struck out one batter. It would be one thing if he got absolutely shelled in one outing and it was clear he needed more work in minor league camp, but he looked solid so he probably earned himself at least a few more outings.

Alas, now Madden will have to work his way up the hard way. It may be difficult for him to break through on the big league roster this season as Detroit's rotation is pretty stacked, but maybe if Madden pitches well in Triple-A he could get called up as a long reliever or potentially even as a starter if there is an injury in the rotation.

It's a disappointment for Madden to get sent down so soon, but if he's healthy at least he can try to get back to where he was a few years ago.
