On Friday, the Tigers called up No. 22 prospect Trei Cruz when Wenceel Pérez went onto the IL with a facial fracture. His debut made the Cruzes just the fifth family in MLB history to have three generations of major league players. His father José Cruz Jr. is a Gold Glove winner and his grandfather José Cruz is an Astros Hall of Famer.
Both were present through the Tigers' series against the White Sox over the weekend, when the youngest Cruz got starts in the both the opener and finale. Unfortunately, he couldn't record his first major league hit with them in attendance.
After just two games and five at-bats, the Tigers decided they'd seen enough. On Tuesday, they announced that they've selected the contract of outfielder Ben Malgeri. Cruz is headed back down to Triple-A, and Burch Smith was moved to the 60-day IL to accommodate Malgeri on the 40-man roster.
The Tigers today selected the contract of OF Ben Malgeri from Triple-A Toledo. Malgeri joins the first major league roster of his career and will wear uniform number 53.

OF Trei Cruz was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following last night's game.
To make room for Malgeri on the…
Malgeri is unranked in the Tigers' system but has dominated at Triple-A this year. Fans who were fed up with Pérez long before he ended up on the IL had been eyeing Malgeri as a potential replacement and were dissatisfied when Cruz got the nod instead.
As least they didn't have to stew in their disgruntlement for long. The Tigers are tentatively on the up-and-up, and their patience with replacements might be wearing thin.
Tigers promote unranked prospect Ben Malgeri; option Trei Cruz after hitless major league stint
Optioning Cruz after just two games and five at-bats of playing time might be a little harsh, but we're glad that the Tigers are keeping the line moving and moving a few pieces around without any real roster repercussions. The bottom of the Tigers' order has gotten better as Hao-Yu Lee has settled in a bit, but Detroit needs to see more production from their last three hitters.
Malgeri was an 18th-round pick for the Tigers in 2021 out of Northeastern University. He's slowly but surely worked his way up the ranks and was promoted to Triple-A to start the 2026 season. Through 65 games, he's hitting .296 with an .897 OPS, nine homers, and 34 RBI. He had a four-RBI day on June 14, when he went 3-for-5 and was just a triple away from a cycle.
If Malgeri doesn't make a quick impression, we wouldn't be surprised if Cruz ends up coming back, then going back down, and so on, teeter-tottering back and forth until one of them figures it out (or Pérez recovers). The Tigers can't afford to give either a very long leash right now, even if they don't have that many alternative options.
