Tigers No. 2 prospect Max Clark was having a pretty good start to spring training. He appeared in Detroit's first two games, and saved them from an outright loss against the Orioles when he hit a game-tying RBI in the bottom of the ninth (the game ended in a tie).
Clark's not fighting for a roster spot in spring training. Kevin McGonigle is the only member of the Tigers' three-headed prospect dragon currently situated in Double-A Erie who has a distinct chance of making the roster. But that doesn't mean that Clark isn't there to make a good impression and live up to the top prospect hype.
And he dropped the ball on Tuesday against the Braves. Literally. Twice.
Clark was spotted early by the Braves broadcast because of his top prospect pedigree and because of the massive diamond chains he was wearing in left field. Former MLB pitcher and current Braves broadcaster CJ Nitkowski made a few snide, old-timer asides about them; something along the lines of, "back in my day, a guy who isn't going to be on the Opening Day roster would never do that."
Clark proceeded to have a pretty bad day on both sides of the ball — and the Braves broadcast let him have it.
No. 2 prospect Max Clark had a no good, very bad day in Tigers spring training
Clark botched two plays in the outfield — first missing an easy pop up into shallow left from Matt Olson, then missing a long fly ball from Austin Riley by more than foot at the warning track, which went over the wall for a ground-rule double. Later, he slipped trying to recover a line drive from Ozzie Albies, after which point Nitkowski said, "Jeez. Not his day out there."
When it was his turn at the plate, Clark fell on a checked swing, prompting more commentary from the Braves booth: "He can't get back to Lakeland fast enough."
The Braves' guys might've had a little too much fun making fun of a 21-year-old, and you won't hear us getting mad about something as inconsequential as wearing a little bit of drip out on the field, but we'll admit that it was funny for Clark to go out there and project swagger, only to have a rather suboptimal day.
Ah, well. The kid will shake it off. Hopefully he's gotten it all out of his system.
