While Baseball America is not all that high on the Detroit Tigers’ farm system in its latest rankings, the team has to feel pretty good about one of its top prospects right now. Infielder Bryce Rainer had a huge game at the plate down in High-A on July 8, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he gets promoted again sometime soon.
Rainer recorded a five-hit game, and all five of his hits had an exit velocity of 109 miles per hour or higher, which is remarkable. He is hitting the ball so hard, and his stats are reflective of that as well.
The 21-year-old is hitting .293/.401/.505 with nine home runs and 45 RBI during his tenure with the High-A affiliate this year, after a bit of a puzzling start. He has already been promoted from Single-A, thanks in large part to the massive 477-foot homer he hit — which is the longest homer ever recorded in the Tigers organization.
It’s great to see him making this progress after he was robbed of nearly his entire 2025 season due to a shoulder injury. There’s always the fear a season-ending injury like that will harm a player’s development, but he seems to be right on track with where the Tigers would want him to be at this point.
There is some cause for concern with Tigers top prospect Bryce Rainer despite huge game
Not all of his numbers are cause for excitement, though. He’s struck out 109 times in 260 at-bats before the break this season, which is alarming. He’s probably never going to be Kevin McGonigle with his strikeout-to-walk ratio, but he needs to cut down on those strikeout numbers if he wants to move through the minors quickly.
There’s always a fear of moving a guy through the minors too quickly, but Rainer doesn’t have too much left to prove in High-A. He’s probably going to earn his second promotion of the year at some point, and the Tigers would be wise to give him a taste of Double-A prior to next season.
If he acquaints himself well in Double-A, then the Tigers can feel good about having him start at that level next season. If he splits time between Double-A and Triple-A next season, he could have a chance to make the team out of spring training in 2028, which would be consistent with when he’s expected to make his big league debut.
The strikeouts are definitely something to keep an eye on, but if he keeps absolutely smoking the ball in the minors, it’s going to become nearly impossible to avoid promoting him. He’s the No. 2 prospect in the organization and the Tigers have to be dreaming of a future in which he and McGonigle comprise a star tandem up the middle. With each ball he hits the snot out of, that reality becomes even more fun to think about for Tigers fans.
