Troy Melton's 2026 Tigers run portends future Cy Young contention after Yankees comparison

Troy Melton's last few starts have been a little rocky, but it's unsurprising that he's come back down to earth a little after maintaining a sub-2.00 ERA through nine starts between July and August, and he still looks like the most promising young talent in the Tigers' pitching staff right now.

Melton's ascent was part of the reason the front office felt comfortable trading Tarik Skubal at the deadline. He's fully supplanted Framber Valdez as Detroit's ace-apparent, and fans are already clamoring for an extension to get done in the offseason, lest they make the same mistakes with him that they did with Skubal.

It's hard not to wonder what the broader conversation around Melton could look like if his season hadn't begun in late May. Could he be in the AL Cy Young conversation alongside the Blue Jays' Dylan Cease and Yankees' Cam Schlittler?

This stat basically answers that question.

The Cease/Schlittler debate is going to come down to the wire, but Schlittler might have the edge right now. Cease has more strikeouts in fewer innings and a complete game shutout under his belt; Schlittler has the better ERA and WHIP. The Yankees rookie has been on an historic pace in his own regard.

Melton hasn't been quite as dominant for either, but there's no telling what he'll be able to do when he has a fully healthy season under his belt.

Troy Melton should be in the conversation for the AL Cy Young in 2027

Though Jackson Jobe was always the more highly-touted prospect, Melton has emerged as the greater talent early on. Though we might be getting ahead of ourselves, the Tigers would certainly love to have another Justin Verlander-Max Scherzer situation on their hands at some point, and a Melton-Jobe combo certainly gives them their best shot at it in years.

The Tigers' recent track record of developing pitchers has been spotty at best. Skubal, Casey Mize, and even Keider Montero were all slower burns, and a slew of former top prospects like Ty Madden and Sawyer Gipson-Long may never emerge as viable talents.

Melton has been their most prominent exception. If the Tigers were actually enjoying a winning season right now, there would probably be more eyes on him.

But 2027 will be a blank slate, and as long as Melton is healthy, he should be giving emerging AL talents like Schlittler and the Guardians' Parker Messick grief in future Cy Young conversations.
