Youngest and oldest Silver Slugger winners in Tigers history

It’s been a tough year for the Detroit Tigers, but there’s a decent chance at least one or two of their players will take home a Louisville Silver Slugger Award, which goes to the best hitter at each position on the field in both the American and National Leagues, as voted by MLB managers and coaches.

2026 will be the second year FanSided announces the winners of the award. That’s why it’s a perfect time to dive into some of the history of the award as it pertains to the Tigers.

Detroit has been represented 35 times since the award’s inception in 1980. Let’s take a look at the youngest and oldest winners in the club's history.

Oldest and youngest Tigers winners of Silver Slugger in team history

When one thinks of Tigers Silver Slugger winners, big names like Miguel Cabrera or Prince Fielder immediately spring to mind, but the youngest player to ever win one with the Tigers may be a bit unexpected.

Travis Fryman took home the AL Silver Slugger for shortstop in 1992 at just 23 years old, the only Silver Slugger of his career. He hit .266/.316/.416 with 20 home runs and 96 RBI that season.

It was the first of three straight All-Star seasons for Fryman. He actually had a better year offensively in 1993, hitting .300/.379/.486 with 22 homers and 97 RBI, but he lost out on Silver Slugger honors at shortstop to Cal Ripken Jr.

Fryman played eight seasons in total with the Tigers and had a solid tenure with Detroit before joining the Cleveland Indians. While Fryman isn’t the first name many will think of when remembering Tigers Silver Slugger winners, he holds the distinction of being the youngest.

As for the oldest Tigers winner in history, that honor goes to Torii Hunter. He only spent two seasons with Detroit toward the end of his career, but he had a strong season offensively at the age of 37 in 2013.

Hunter hit .304/.334/.465 with 17 homers and 84 RBI that season. It was far from the most impressive offensive year of his career, but his second career Silver Slugger was still well-deserved.

Kevin McGonigle has a decent chance to win a Silver Slugger either this year or next at 21 or 22 years old, which would dethrone Fryman. Maybe, if he spends his whole career with the Tigers and that contact profile ages well, he could even break Hunter’s record for the oldest. For now, though, those two hold the honor.
