It might be on us for buying in.

Detroit Tigers fans have always had a love-hate relationship with Zach McKinstry. While he was an All-Star last season and looked like he had found something at the plate after years of struggling, he has essentially been a black hole in the lineup for the most part this season.

But on June 9, McKinstry reached base four times with a single, a triple, and two walks. From June 1 through June 11, he hit .318 with a .990 OPS. His overall numbers on the year still weren't pretty, but he was slowly creeping his way back to respectable numbers.

At the same time, the Tigers were winning and showing signs of life. They were 7-2 to kick off June after their brutal start to the 2026 campaign. They were showing fight, and they got good news as Tarik Skubal made his return.

But just as the Tigers started to lose again — they've lost four of their last five — McKinstry's bat fizzled out again. He's hitless and walkless in his last 13 plate appearances since that brief spell of effectiveness.

Zach McKinstry returned to All-Star form at the beginning of June but has turned back into a pumpkin for Tigers

The Tigers are going to need a lot to go right for them if they want to climb out of the hole they’ve dug for themselves. McKinstry getting hot could be key in that effort, considering the team needs help from all areas of the roster.

McKinstry’s defensive prowess has never been in question and he provides inherent value with his ability to move all over the diamond. Every team benefits from a utility guy like him, so when he hits, he goes from “useful” to “All-Star” like he did last season.

Detroit manager AJ Hinch recently said of McKinstry, “We need the good version of him." For a brief moment, they did get that version of him.

But he was probably never going to be able to make that success sustainable. He obviously looked better and he seems to be recovered from the injury that kept him out earlier in the season, but it we can probably chalk up that hot streak to the overall streakiness of the Tigers' lineup in general.

McKinstry can be such a key part of the lineup when he’s right. If the Tigers are to have any hopes of a big turnaround, he could be a really underrated component of that effort. Unfortunately, he's not providing any reassurances right now.
