Detroit Tigers Minor League Recap 4/28/13: Pat Leyland Makes Season Debut

AAA: Norfolk 4, Toledo 3

Jose Alvarez (1.61 ERA) went all eight innings for the Mud Hens on Sunday, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits (one was a home run), one walk, and six strikeouts.

Non-prospects Danny Dorn (.219/.311/.422) and John Lindsey (.205/.266/.438) each homered, and Quintin Berry (.217/.287/.304) doubled. Nick Castellanos (.253/.309/.434) was 0-4 with a strikeout.

Toledo is now just 7-18 on the season.

AA: Altoona 3, Erie 1

Daniel Fields (.250/.353/.431) and Tyler Collins (.222/.286/.349) each doubled. Hernan Perez (.348/.362/.472), James Robbins (.284/.329/.392), and Luis Castillo each singled. No one for Erie had more than one hit.

Patrick Cooper went 6.2 innings with four strikeouts, three walks, five hits, and two runs allowed. Will Startup pitched 1.1 innings in relief, walking one, striking out one, and allowing a solo home run.

Erie is 12-9 on the year.

Advanced-A: Lakeland 11, Charlotte 4

Eugenio Suarez has been turning it on lately after a slow start; he had a hit and two walks on the night. Pat Leyland made his season debut, going 2-5. Avisail Garcia was 1-4 with a walk playing in his fourth game of the year — he’ll likely be headed to Toledo once his injury assignment is finished. Jeff McVaney was 2-5 with a triple, Brandon Loy was 2-3 plus a walk, and Aaron Westlake was 1-5 with a strikeout.

Wilsen Palacios (3.91 ERA) allowed three runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings on three walks and two strikeouts. Ryan Robowski (3.38 ERA) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless ball with a walk and a strikeout, and Michael Torrealba (3.75 ERA) recorded the save with three innings of relief (2 K, 2 BB).

The Flying Tigers are 9-14.

A: West Michigan 5, Beloit 3

Catcher Bennett Pickar (.333/.342/.472) was 3-4 with two doubles to lead the way for the Whitecaps’ hitters. Jake Stewart, Devon Travis, Lance Durham, and Mario Martinez had a single each.

Endrys Briceno got the start and pitched 4.1 innings of two-run ball with four walks and two strikeouts. Logan Ehlers allowed a run in one inning with a walk and a strikeout. Brennan Smith, Angel Nesbitt, and Jose Valdez combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

West Michigan is 10-11 on the year.
