When We Last Met

Another pitching duel went the Detroit Tigers way on Monday night as they plated two runs against CC Sabathia in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead. Joba Chamberlain and Joakim Soria (again) made that run stand up as the Tigers improved to 11-2 on the season.

Pitching Matchup

Kyle Lobstein (1-0, 5.40) starts the second game of the New York series, once again in place of Justin Verlander. Kyle did well last year in place of Anibal Sanchez down the stretch, holding the Yankees’ bats in check in a game at Comerica Park last Aug 28. That was, in fact, his first Major League win, allowing just one earned run in six innings of a 3-2 Detroit win.

He started in the Cleveland series and was knocked around a bit and struggled with control, allowing three runs on eight hits and walked two in five innings. Lobstein was saved from further damage because of the Tigers’ rejuvenated defense and hot hitting in the 8-5 Detroit win on April 12.

The Yankees once again go with a virtual unknown for Tigers’ bats in Nathan Eovaldi (0-0, 4.35). He has been fairly effective in two starts, going 10.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on 16 hits. He struck out nine batters in his previous start at Baltimore in a game ultimately lost by New York.

He has faced the Tigers once when he was a member of the Miami Marlins, picking up the win by allowing seven hits and one run over six innings on Sept. 28, 2013.
