When We Last Met

The Detroit Tigers pitched their third shutout in a week and received another complete game shutout by a starter, this time from previously struggling Anibal Sanchez. It was good to see Anibal putting two consecutive solid outings together and he was masterful in the 6-0 shutout of the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.

Pitching Matchup

Kyle Ryan (1-0, 2.08) keeps earning more starts because of his effectiveness in scattered appearances. He has appeared as both a starter and long reliever and he’s excelled every time the Detroit Tigers have asked him to pitch in. He gets the start in place of Shane Greene, who was demoted to AAA Toledo last week. Ironically, Ryan’s last appearance came in Greene’s last start and once again held the fort down. He went three innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run. He last started a game on June 5 against the Chicago White Sox, going seven strong innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

For the second night in a row, the Tigers will face a rookie with very limited appearances in Reds’ starter Michael Lorenzen (1-2, 4.01). In a mix of starts and relief appearances, the right-hander has pitched in nine games. He was hit up for six runs (five earned) in his last start against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday and has allowed 10 runs in his last three appearances, spanning 16.2 innings.
