Game Preview

The Detroit Tigers will attempt to recover from the tough two games the last couple days. First, Detroit blew a six-run lead on Friday and then lost again, 9-5, on Saturday. The Tigers need a win in Minnesota on Sunday in order to split the series.

Detroit comes into Sunday’s action 3.5 games behind the Twins for second place and eight games behind the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central.

When We Last Met

As previously mentioned, the Tigers have had a rough couple of days. They still lead the season series, 8-4, but Detroit has dropped two crucial games in a row, including one that should have been a victory on Friday night.

Pitching Matchup

Right-hander Shane Greene will make his return to the rotation on Sunday. Greene pitched extremely well in his first outing against the Twins this season, allowing just one unearned run on four hits in eight innings, but in his second start versus Minnesota, Greene yielded seven runs on nine hits, including two bombs.

Greene hasn’t made a major league appearance since June 10 when he allowed five runs on seven hits in three innings versus the Cubs. He is 4-6 with a 5.82 ERA in 13 starts this season. In his five minor league starts in the last month, Greene went 1-1 with a 3.42 ERA.

The Twins will send right-hander Kyle Gibson to the mound on Sunday. He is 7-6 with a 3.04 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 106 2/3 innings this season.

Gibson hasn’t pitched particularly well versus Detroit this season, going 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in two outings.
