When We Last Met

The Detroit Tigers are facing the Kansas City Royals for the second time in as many weeks. Tuesday will be the second game of the three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals won Monday night behind a very strong Johnny Cueto outing. Cueto threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits in his nine frames, and the Royals won, 4-0.

Including the loss on Friday, Detroit is 5-6 versus Kansas City this season.

Pitching Matchup

Right-hander Anibal Sanchez will be on the mound Tuesday as Detroit tries to avoid a three-game losing streak. The Tigers won his last outing, which was against the Royals last week, but it was behind a strong offensive game from Detroit. Sanchez allowed four runs on five hits and four walks in six innings.

Sanchez has pitched better since his rough April, but since the All-Star break, the right-hander has a 5.58 ERA and 1.598 WHIP in 30 2/3 innings. Overall, Sanchez is 5-9 with a 4.82 ERA, 1.266 WHIP and 132 strikeouts in 149 1/3 innings.

24-year-old right-hander Yordano Ventura will take the hill for the Royals. He allowed six runs in the same game that Sanchez yielded four last week. Ventura has a 8.18 ERA against the Tigers in 11 innings this season.

Ventura, who has been back-and-forth between the Royals and their Triple-A affiliate, has a 6-7 record with a 5.29 ERA, 1.343 WHIP and 75 strikeouts in 95 1/3 innings this season.
