Detroit Tigers outfielder Jim Adduci is back with the club. The Tigers announced on Twitter that the veteran has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo.

Detroit Tigers fans will see a familiar face return to the team to help replace J.D. Martinez’ production.

With Martinez having been dealt to Arizona for three infield prospects in Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara and Jose King, the Tigers had an opening in right field.

The Tigers called up outfielder Jim Adduci to provide some production in the outfield.

Detroit announced the move on Wednesday morning in a tweet on the team’s official Twitter account.

The team tweeted the following:

“The #Tigers today have recalled OF Jim Adduci from Triple-A Toledo.”

Adduci previously appeared in 13 games for Detroit earlier in the season, tallying 49 total plate appearances.

The 32-year-old responded with eight runs scored, seven RBI, five walks, four doubles and two triples. He also chipped in with a .318 batting average, a .388 on-base percentage and a .888 OPS.

A former Ranger, Adduci spent parts of two seasons with Texas from 2013 to 2014.

He notched a .501 OPS, one home run, 15 runs scored and 12 extra-base hits. However, he’s been decidedly more productive in the Detroit Tigers organization.

Following a stint overseas, the outfielder returned to Major League Baseball this season. He was hitting .288 with a .319 on-base percentage, a .444 slugging percentage and a .761 OPS for Triple-A Toledo.

With Martinez now in Arizona with the Diamondbacks, Adduci gives Detroit a different look in right field.

Not only is he much better on the base paths—a 0.4 BsR this year, and a lifetime 2.9 BsR compared to Martinez’ -1.2 2017 BsR and career -15.6 BsR—but Adduci is also a more reliable defensive outfielder.

In 438 defensive innings with the Tigers prior to his trade on Tuesday, Martinez registered a -5 DRS, a -14.1 UZR/150, a -4.5 UZR and a -4.4 ARM.

Adduci, in an albeit limited sample size, posted a DRS of 2, a 41.1 UZR/150, a 3.1 UZR and a 2.0 ARM.

Long-term

Moving forward, Adduci and Alex Presley are likely to see the lion’s share of playing time at the position.

Neither Steven Moya nor Tyler Collins look like candidates to be added back onto the 40-man roster given their respective production in the minors.

What’s more, prospect Christin Stewart, Martinez’ likely long-term successor, is still at Double-A Erie.

It possible that the Tigers could net a young outfielder in a trade over the course of the next few weeks. However, for now, expect Jim Adduci to get some regular at-bats.
