Adam Wilk Won’t Be Here Long

FSD play-by-play man Mario Impemba got this nugget from Tigers manager Jim Leyland and then tweeted it to the masses:

If this holds true, it means the Tigers would have risked losing right hander Robbie Weinhardt for four days of Adam Wilk. This seems very, very silly to me.

Weinhardt has had a bad season, no question about it, but by designating him for assignment they have exposed him to waivers and they only way they retain his rights is if he goes unclaimed. Then, they would simply outright him to Toledo. I would not be shocked at all if Weinhardt were claimed during this 10-day window.

That move, the DFA, was surprising enough on its face, but when you then consider that the plan is to have Wilk on the roster only until Andy Oliver is recalled in time to pitch on Saturday, it makes no sense whatsoever.

The simple fact is that they didn’t have to make this move. They had pitchers who were already on the 40-man that could have come up. Heck, they could have simply brought Brayan Villarreal back up to Detroit since he would be replacing an injured player.

To me, making this move says more about how far out of favor Weinhardt has fallen than it says about Wilk.
