When We Last Met
The Detroit Tigers got off the schnide last night with a 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers. Included in the festivities was Andrew Romine‘s first career home run — a shot down the line off the foul pole. Anibal Sanchez led the way with seven strong innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts.
Pitching Matchup
Rick Porcello gets the nod for the Tigers. He’s on pace for his most impressive season with a 2.91 ERA (3.19 FIP, 3.32 xFIP) and a miniscule 1.20 BB/9 rate. His strikeout rate of 5.6 per nine is down from last year’s rate of 7.2, but it would still qualify as the second-highest rate of his career.
Nick Martinez will make his fourth career start this afternoon. He has an impressive 2.28 ERA in 27.2 total innings this year, but that level of success isn’t necessarily supported by his peripheral stats (he’s walked nearly as many as he’s struck out), but he’s benefited from a low BABIP and high strand rate.
