When We Last Met
Drew Smyly experienced his second straight sub-par game and the Tigers dropped the second game of the series to the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3. The bats couldn’t really get much going as two of the three runs scored on a Torii Hunter bounce out-one for a double play with the bases loaded and nobody out.
Pitching Matchup

Anibal Sanchez (5-2, 2.63) has been the most consistent starter on the Detroit Tigers’ staff for much of the season, however his last two outings have not been vintage Anibal. He was the starter in the opener of the Oakland series and did pitch fairly well, but late fatigue led to a couple of runs for the A’s (both earned and unearned). All told, he was only on the hook for two earned runs, but nearly took the loss save for the improbable Rajai Davis grand slam. Sanchez faced the Rays in Detroit last year, allowing one run in seven innings in the 10-1 Detroit win.

Chris Archer (4-5, 3.24) was sharp in his last outing, going seven innings of five-hit, two-run ball. He received a no-decision in Tampa Bay’s 4-3 win over the New York Yankees on Monday. He also received a no-decision when he faced the Tigers in Detroit last year, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings of work in a game the Rays would eventually win 4-3.
