When We Last Met
There was playoff level anxiety on both sides in Kansas City in the key second game of the final series between the Royals and Tigers on Saturday. It was truly a pitching duel between aces Max Scherzer and James Shields with Scherzer coming out on top after a KC go-ahead run was wiped off the board when Salvador Perez failed to touch third base before coming home after a lineout to Ian Kinsler and near error allowed him to advance. That was the turning point in the game and the Tigers scored twice in the ensuing half inning. Joba and Joe tried to give it away but Detroit held on for a 3-2 lead, assuring they’d leave Kauffmann Stadium with a bigger lead in the division than they started the series with.
Pitching Matchup
Rick Porcello (15-11, 3.19) deserved better in his last outing when he allowed just two runs on seven hits in eight innings on Tuesday. J.D. Martinez hit a three-run shot to ratchet up the punchless Tigers’ attack in the ninth inning, but Nathan promptly allowed his old team to walk-off with a 4-3 win. Rick has not won in his last four outings, going 0-3 over that time, however its been a lack of run support that has doomed him more than anything, including against the Royals on Sept. 10 when he allowed just two runs in a 2-0 KC shutout.
Jeremy Guthrie (11-11, 4.35) was lit up for eight runs (six earned) when he faced the Tigers a few weeks ago in Detroit. He bounced back nicely in his last game, however, allowing no earned runs on three hits in eight innings of a 7-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.
